About this instrument

French Cello, Mirecourt, c. 1820

This French cello was made in Mirecourt around 1820 and is a particularly fine example of early 19th-century French instrument making. Notable not only for its very good, powerful sound, but above all for its exceptional state of preservation, this cello remains in truly superb condition for an instrument approximately 200 years old.

By this time, Mirecourt already possessed a centuries-old tradition of stringed-instrument making. Violin makers are documented there from the early 17th century, and in 1732 the craft was granted its own guild regulations. Around 1820, the French school was undergoing an important phase of development: Mirecourt violin makers studied Italian and German models, gained experience in Paris and subsequently brought their knowledge back home. At the same time, larger workshops organized according to a division of labour were emerging, while full-scale manufactories did not become significant until several decades later. Instruments from this early period therefore often combine traditional hand craftsmanship with the clear, functional design language for which Mirecourt later became renowned.

The cello is built on a generous and very harmoniously proportioned model. The softly rounded upper bouts, open C-bouts and broad, powerfully sweeping lower bouts create a balanced yet imposing silhouette. The corners are cleanly and elegantly executed without appearing excessively sharp or mannered. Particularly characteristic are the long, upright f-holes with their widely opened lower eyes. They lend the table an expressive and unmistakable appearance.

The spruce table displays even, predominantly fine annual-ring spacing. The warm golden-orange varnish reveals the structure of the wood to particularly fine effect. Over time, subtle darker traces and a natural patina of use have developed on the table, lending the instrument historical character without detracting from its exceptionally well-cared-for overall appearance.

The two-piece maple back has fine, regular figure running horizontally. It is especially lively in the lower area, lending the instrument an elegant and serene sense of depth. The ribs are likewise made of attractively flamed maple and blend harmoniously into the overall appearance. The transparent varnish ranges from pale gold through warm amber to a discreet orange-brown, bringing out the natural structure of the wood to particularly fine effect.

The cleanly carved scroll has a clear, well-balanced volute and reflects the same straightforward approach to craftsmanship as the body. The edges, purfling, corners and contours are preserved with unusual freshness. The back and ribs in particular display only very slight signs of age and use. Its state of preservation may therefore, without exaggeration, be described as exceptional and absolutely first-rate. A Mirecourt cello from this early period surviving in such complete and well-cared-for condition is by no means commonplace.

In tonal terms, the instrument impresses with a very good, powerful and projecting sound. It has ample substance and sufficient volume to unfold in the room with clarity and presence. Its richly developed overtones lend the sound brilliance, colour and vitality without making it seem harsh or superficial. The tone has a firm core, combining power with a pleasing openness.

Particularly appealing is the combination of the clear, immediate response of a good French cello with the tonal maturity of an instrument approximately two centuries old. The tone is mature, present and rich in overtones, offering excellent qualities for solo playing as well as chamber music and orchestral use.

An exceptionally well-preserved historical cello from Mirecourt, a city with a distinguished tradition of violin making—powerful and colourful in sound, highly elegant in appearance and, for its age, in remarkably superb condition.
