About this instrument

Christian Wilhelm Seidel was a son and pupil of the violin maker Johann Gottlob Seidel. His instruments are valued for their clean, professional workmanship, carefully selected wood and fine tone. In addition to various German and Italian-influenced models, he also developed a distinctive Seidel model of his own.

The present instrument has an attractive one-piece maple back and displays particularly appealing craftsmanship in its striking triple purfling. Most notable is the arching, which is exceptionally flat for the period in which it was made. This gives the violin a surprisingly modern appearance and makes its construction seem almost ahead of its time.

The violin is tonally compelling, with a bright, clear and far-carrying sound. It responds easily and immediately, giving the player a pleasantly direct playing experience. Its projecting tone makes it an interesting instrument both for ambitious musicians and for enthusiasts of historic German violins.

Despite its considerable age, the violin remains in very good condition. A sonorous and visually distinctive instrument with a special presence and a fine connection to Markneukirchen’s important tradition of violin making.
