About this instrument

This exceptionally beautiful cello was made by Johann Heinrich Schult in Lübeck in 1920 and is a particularly representative example of the high quality of German violin making at the beginning of the 20th century.

The instrument is built on a classically balanced model and displays exceptionally careful, assured craftsmanship. Particularly striking is the two-piece back of evenly and vividly flamed maple. The well-matched, similarly strongly flamed ribs and the attractively figured neck combine to create a harmonious and highly appealing overall appearance.

The luminous red-orange varnish has a warm depth and a very beautiful, natural craquelure. Its fine ageing and discreet signs of use lend the cello a characterful, authentic appearance. The elegantly cut f-holes, cleanly worked edges and corners, and carefully carved scroll further attest to the maker’s exacting standards of craftsmanship.

Johann Heinrich Schult ranks among the respected North German violin makers of his time. Born in Mecklenburg in 1866, he studied under Otto Schünemann and established his own workshop in Lübeck’s Königstraße in 1896. His exceptional craftsmanship quickly earned him an excellent reputation. In 1907, he was appointed court violin maker to the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg. His instruments received important awards in Turin and Schwerin. He was especially esteemed for his meticulous workmanship, his selection of excellent tonewoods and his high-quality varnishes.

Tonally, this cello impresses with a large, open and exceptionally projecting sound. Its beautiful, mellow timbre has warmth and depth without sacrificing clarity or presence. The sound develops evenly across all registers, combining power and volume with a pleasingly smooth and refined tonal character.

Thanks to its immediate response and exceptionally easy playability, the instrument can be handled effortlessly. It responds sensitively to the finest variations of the bow and enables both powerful solo playing and nuanced, richly coloured expression.

An outstanding cello, both tonally and visually, by an important German violin maker—large and far-carrying in sound, yet warm, mellow and exceptionally pleasant to play.
