About this instrument

This characterful violin by Martin Leopold Widhalm was made around 1780 and is a particularly expressive example of the Nuremberg school of violin making. The instrument has been fully restored and is now in playing condition. The preservation of its original neck is a feature of particular historical significance.

The violin displays the powerful and distinctive formal language characteristic of Widhalm. Its warm golden-brown to deep reddish-brown varnish has a lively patina developed over many decades. The clearly visible traces of playing and age lend the instrument an exceptional presence and underscore its authentic historical character. Particularly appealing are the distinctive figuring of the varnish, the finely worked edges and corners, and the characterfully cut f-holes.

Tonally, the violin impresses with a beautiful, rounded, warm and extraordinarily rich palette of colours. Its typically Widhalm tonal character combines a substantial, projecting core with numerous tonal nuances. The instrument responds with subtlety to the bow, allowing both soft, intimate colours and powerful, expressive passages.

A historically significant violin of great personality, with its original neck and a warm, versatile sound—of particular interest to discerning musicians seeking a characterful 18th-century instrument.
