About this instrument
This violin by Johann Udalricus Eberle was made in Prague circa 1760 and displays the distinctive, highly individual style characteristic of 18th-century Bohemian violin making.
The instrument has a very finely flamed two-piece maple back, with ribs worked to match, and a warm golden to reddish-brown varnish that gives it a particularly harmonious and lively appearance. Its elegant lines, pronounced arching and characterful scroll underscore the violin’s historic character.
Tonally, the instrument impresses with an exceptionally refined, warm and richly coloured sound of high quality. The tone has considerable warmth and substance while remaining clear and well defined. Particularly appealing is its broad palette of tonal colours: depending on the player’s approach, the sound can be shaped in markedly different ways, offering great expressive scope and musical flexibility.
The individual registers blend evenly with one another, and the tone remains cultivated and pleasing throughout. This is a violin of considerable personality, distinguished not by overt volume but by the quality, warmth and richness of colour of its sound.
A particularly appealing historic instrument for players and connoisseurs who appreciate the individual character of a fine 18th-century Prague violin.
