About this instrument

French Cello, c. 1820–1850
This approximately 200-year-old French cello was probably made between 1820 and 1850, a particularly interesting period in the history of European instrument making. At that time, France was developing into one of the foremost centres of stringed-instrument making. Alongside the Parisian workshops, Mirecourt played an especially important role. Makers of the period frequently drew inspiration from classical Italian models, while developing a distinctly French idiom of their own: robust in construction, elegant in line and often characterised by a direct, projecting sound.

The cello has a generous, well-proportioned model with beautifully rounded upper and lower bouts. The boldly defined corners and long, characterful f-holes lend the table an expressive appearance. The two-piece back is of maple with fine, horizontal flame, also present in the ribs. Particularly appealing is the warm, transparent varnish in shades ranging from golden brown to reddish orange. Different nuances emerge according to the angle of the light, accentuating the natural depth of the wood.

The patina acquired over many decades, together with small scratches and age-appropriate signs of use, speaks of the instrument’s long history. Far from detracting from its appearance, these features lend the cello its distinctive, authentic character. Despite its considerable age, it remains overall in a very good and well-cared-for state of preservation.

Tonally, the cello impresses with an exceptionally beautiful and characterful voice. The bass is powerful, full and projecting, providing the sound with a firm foundation. Above it, clear, brilliant registers rich in overtones unfold, lending the instrument presence and vitality. The sound combines depth and warmth with an attractive brilliance, while remaining colourful and expressive.

An interesting historic instrument for musicians who value not only a fine sound, but also the distinctive presence and history of a French cello approximately two centuries old.
