About this instrument

This cello by Aldo Capelli was made in Cervia in 1974 and is preserved in exceptionally fine, almost as-new condition. The instrument is a particularly attractive example of Italian violin making from the second half of the 20th century.

Visually, the cello is distinguished by its meticulous workmanship, its intensely flamed two-piece maple back and its equally beautifully figured ribs. The warm golden-yellow to amber varnish brings out the structure of the wood to particularly striking effect and gives the instrument a distinctly elegant and harmonious appearance.

The cello also possesses a strong tonal personality. Its tone is dark, powerful and full, with a particularly pronounced and carrying bass foundation. The lower registers have considerable substance and warmth, while the overall sound remains clear and present. The instrument responds with pleasing immediacy and gives the player a secure, uncomplicated playing experience.

Of particular interest is the cello’s excellent documentation. It is accompanied by Aldo Capelli’s original certificate from 1974. The instrument is also documented with illustrations in Leonardo Cella’s standard reference work “Liuteria Romagnola”, further underscoring its significance within modern Italian violin making.

The combination of its outstanding state of preservation, original documentation, attractive appearance and powerful, dark tone makes this cello of equal interest to discerning musicians and collectors of Italian instruments.

An exceptionally well-preserved and fully documented cello with a distinctive character, considerable tonal substance and particular collector value.
