About this instrument

This French violin by Étienne Drouin was made in Mirecourt in 1876. Its warm reddish-brown varnish over a luminous golden ground lends the instrument a beautiful sense of depth. On the back in particular, the interplay of varnish and wood creates a lively, almost shimmering effect. The visible patina adds to the individual character of this antique violin.

The vividly flamed maple of the back, ribs and neck contrasts attractively with the straight grain of the spruce top. Harmonious proportions, elegantly cut f-holes and an expressive scroll complete its appearance. This is a violin with a warm, distinctive presence and many appealing details to discover on closer inspection.

Tonally, it has considerable substance: the sound is broad, dark and very powerful, while offering a rich variety of colours. A full-bodied core and clear, incisive accents give the tone plenty of punch. The combination of dark tonal fullness, strength and colour makes this violin particularly appealing to players seeking an expressive sound with a strong personality.

Étienne Drouin worked in Mirecourt during the 19th century and was known as a careful craftsman within the town’s violin-making tradition. His role as a teacher is especially interesting: Charles Georges Brugère received his initial training with him. His son Charles Drouin also learned the craft from him and continued the family tradition.
